In this film, Oshima traces Japanese post-war history through the ceremonies (such as weddings and funerals) of the Sakurada family, a patriarchal clan in a provincial Japan. The scenario weaves complicated relationships and the local political culture into the storyline. One of Oshima’s outstanding works, filled with powerful imagery.
